Monthly Recurring Revenue

Also: MRR

Definition. MRR is the sum of all normalized monthly subscription values from active customers at a point in time. It excludes one-time fees, professional services, and usage overages. Best-in-class SaaS companies track MRR to within 1–2% accuracy.

Formula

Monthly Recurring Revenue identity

Plain English: MRR = sum of all monthly subscription values (normalized from any billing cadence to monthly)

Notation: MRR_t = Σ(p_i / billing_months_i) for all active customers i

StageMonthly Recurring RevenueNotes
Seed $0–$50k/month Pre-product-market fit; focus on signal not scale
Series A $50k–$500k/month PMF found, building repeatable motion
Series B $500k–$2M/month Scaling GTM with proven unit economics
Growth / Series C+ $2M+/month Efficient growth with NRR > 110%

Naive vs corrected

VersionFormula
Naive Sum of all contract values ÷ 12 (overcounts multi-year prepay and inflates MRR by the full TCV)
Corrected Normalize each contract to its monthly run rate regardless of payment cadence; exclude one-time fees, setup charges, and professional services revenue

Common errors

  • Including professional services or implementation fees in MRR
  • Dividing multi-year TCV by 12 instead of normalizing to monthly run rate
  • Counting pilots, POCs, or free trials as MRR before contract execution
  • Including usage-based overages as base MRR rather than tracking separately
  • Not netting out credits and refunds from the MRR figure

Where this sits

Part of the Economics & metrics (C4) cluster in the GTM World Model. Related to the model's "MRR walk identity: MRR_t = MRR_{t-1} + New MRR + Expansion MRR - Contraction MRR - Churned MRR" equation.
