Annual Recurring Revenue

Also: ARR

Definition. ARR is MRR × 12, representing the annualized run rate of all normalized recurring subscription revenue at a moment in time. ARR is a forward-looking snapshot, not a trailing revenue figure. Public SaaS companies typically report ARR as a key operating metric alongside GAAP revenue.

Formula

Annual Recurring Revenue identity

Plain English: ARR = MRR × 12

Notation: ARR_t = MRR_t × 12 = 12 × Σ(p_i / billing_months_i)

StageAnnual Recurring RevenueNotes
Seed $0–$600k ARR Finding repeatable ICP; ARR matters less than learning rate
Series A $1M–$5M ARR T2D3 benchmark: $1M ARR to start Series A
Series B $5M–$25M ARR T2D3: triple to $3M then double twice
Series C $25M–$100M ARR Scaling GTM; gross margin > 70% expected
Pre-IPO / Public $100M+ ARR Most SaaS IPOs occur at $100M–$300M ARR

Naive vs corrected

VersionFormula
Naive GAAP recognized revenue × 12 (wrong: conflates billings timing, deferred revenue, and one-time items with recurring run rate)
Corrected ARR = MRR × 12, where MRR is the normalized monthly subscription value excluding one-time and services revenue

Common errors

  • Using trailing 12-month GAAP revenue as ARR (understates during rapid growth)
  • Including professional services in ARR
  • Counting annual prepay at TCV without confirming auto-renewal terms
  • Reporting ARR growth without disclosing whether it is net or gross of churn
  • Confusing ARR with ACV (Annual Contract Value) for multi-year deals

Where this sits

Part of the Economics & metrics (C4) cluster in the GTM World Model. Related to the model's "ARR growth rate = (ARR_t - ARR_{t-12}) / ARR_{t-12}; used in Rule of 40 and Rule of X calculations" equation.
